Abstract

875,553. Drawing sheet glass. GLACES DE BOUSSOIS. March 21, 1960 [March 23, 1959], No. 9895/60. Addition to 851,264. Class 56. The parent Specification is modified by passing the horizontal flow of glass from the tank furnace to the draw pot over a heat-conductive layer which is fluid at the temperature of the molten glass. The channel taking the flow can thereby be shortened and the rate of glass drawing increased. As shown, in Fig. 1, the supply channel 1 between the tank furnace 3 and the draw pot 2 as in the parent Specification has cooling means to form skins 41, 411 on the molten glass 4 which form the outer layers of the drawn sheet 8. The bottom channel 5 is formed with a trough in which a thin layer 6 of a lubricant is placed to extend over substantially the whole of the channel 5 to a depth of a few centimetres. Molten tin or a tin alloy are preferred. As shown in Fig. 2, the bottom of the supply channel 1 may be positively cooled, as by blocks 11, 12 of fused corundum each having cooling tubes 16, 161 or 17, 171, the smaller tubes 16, 17 lying adjacent the joints 15 between the blocks to solidify any molten material penetrating the joints. Further variations to the channel bottom, to hold the layer 6, are disclosed.
