Abstract
1,230,480. Flat glass manufacture. BOUSSOIS SOUCHON NEUVESEL. 9 Dec., 1968 [14 Dec., 1967], No. 58396/68. Heading C1M. In a process for the manufacture of flat glass by the float process in which the glass is contained within lateral stationary barriers 61 of a material not wetted by the glass and which optionally may be cooled internally, the glass being supported on a bath of molten material, the frictional resistance between the glass and the barriers is reduced by cooling the edges of the glass by means of cooling elements 45 situated above the edges of the glass and which may be carried by the barriers. The cooling element may be a liquid cooled member as shown in which the liquid is circulated via tubes 46 or, alternatively, it may be a duct from which a jet of cooling gas is directed towards the edge of the glass (see Figs. 7 and 8, not shown). Both types of cooling element may be used together (see Figs. 9 and 10, not shown).
