Abstract
<FORM:1006733/C1/1> A continuous ribbon of glass is formed by passing molten glass on to a bath of molten metal or metal salt and, while it is still plastic, stretching sideways to increase the width. The walls of the tank containing the molten metal &c. are formed of carbon or boron nitride and are cooled and cooling members 16 are arranged over the marginal edges of the glass ribbon to render the glass sufficiently set to be gripped by pairs of positively driven rollers 18 arranged at increasing distances from the centre line of the tank. A screen 25 mounted above the surface of the glass serves to prevent the heat from passing to the cooling section 24 of the tank.
