Abstract

874,983. Finishing edges of sheet materials. DAYCO CORPORATION. Feb. 20, 1959 [March 13, 1958], No. 5961/59. Class 42 (1). Apparatus for finishing the edges of an endless belt comprises means for continuously driving the belt and means mounted adjacent thereto for applying heat to the sides of the belt. Means may also be provided for holding the belt in contact with the heat applying means. As shown the apparatus consists of a bench-like structure 11 carrying a bracket 16 on which is mounted a heater block 17, a fixed pulley 37 driven from motor 40, and adjustable pulley 45. The belt 46 to be treated extends around the pulleys 37 and 45, and is driven thereby, and is guided through the heater block 17 where it is pressed into contact therewith by wheels 28 carried by a bracket structure 23. The wheels are operated by a piston in the cylinder 33. Heat is applied by strip heaters 18 and a thermostat is fitted to control the temperature. The block 17 is shaped so as to apply heat only to the edges of the belt in the area of the strength cords therein so as to fuse any loose fibres and prevent the exposed cords unravelling without adversely affecting the remainder of the belt. In a modification the block 17 is made adjustable so as to accommodate belts of different widths and different V angles. Specifications 760,953 and 761,410 are referred to.
