Abstract

1,104,819. Belt gearing. DAYCO CORPORATION. 15 Sept., 1966 [6 Oct., 1965], No. 41226/66. Heading F2Q. Driving belts having polyester reinforcing cords therein, or a sleeve which is to be cut into belts subsequently, are prestretched, after fabrication and curing, by a process comprising heating the belts to between 150‹ and 350‹ F.- preferably 200‹ F.- and then cooling them, while they are stretched by about 1¢% relative to their original length. The belts are placed round rollers 24, 36, rotatably supported on a fixed bar 18 and a movable bar 25, respectively. To allow placing and removal of the belts, one end of each roller shaft 23, 35 bears in an arm 20a, 31 which is movable axially of the roller by rotation of a handle 21, 33 on a spindle 19, 30 screwed into the bar 18, 25, the arms being freely rotatable on the spindles. The bar 25 and roller 36 are moved by an hydraulic jack 29 to tension the belts, and the roller 24 is driven by a motor 42 to slowly move the belts. An hydraulic jack 14 lowers a carrier 16 carrying infra-red heaters 17 which are then energized. After a heating period of about 6 minutes, the heaters are de-energized and raised, and a cooling water spray 44 turned on. Finally the motor 42 is stopped, the jack 29 operated to slacken the belts, and the belts removed.
