874,840. Drying apparatus. PARKINSON COWAN Ltd. Nov. 26, 1957 [Nov. 26, 1956; May 1, 1957], Nos. 36098/56 and 13920/57. Class 96. Apparatus for drying a web of paper comprises a plurality of steam-heated cylinders and at least one radiant heater, e.g. an electric heater or a burner burning fluid fuel, located so that it directs more radiant heat on to the middle part of the web than on to its edges to counteract any tendency for the edges to dry out before the middle part. The radiant heater may be a gas burner, in which a gas-air mixture is passed through perforations in a ceramic plate and burnt on its surface. The heater may heat one side of the web as it passes over a cylinder or between cylinders and a reflector plate may be provided on the other side of the web. The heater may be positioned to heat the air locally, and thus produce convection currents, which prevent blanketing of the web by moist air. The apparatus may also comprise rollers for squeezing the wet web and a generator, such as an air-whistle, for producing acoustic or ultrasonic air-waves, which help in the drying of the web by conducting moist air away from it. At least one radiant heater and one generator may be provided before the squeezing rollers and the first steam-heated cylinder.
