874,768. Resistive coatings. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. Sept. 5, 1959, No. 30365/59. Class 37. A coating for use in a resistor has a major portion consisting of a vitreous medium, e.g. lead borosilicate glasses, and a minor portion consisting of at least one noble metal, added in the form of metal resinates, and a further minor portion comprising a metal oxide semiconductor in the form of manganese, cadmium, ferrous, ferric, copper, zinc and lead oxides, stannates or antimonates or a mixture thereof. There also may be added trace amounts of one or more refractory oxides, opacifiers, in order to reduce contact resistance between moving contacts and the surface of the solidified mixture, e.g. tin oxide, antimony oxide, zirconia, molybdenum oxide and chromium oxide. A further small percentage of a low-melting temperature ceramic flux, e.g. bismuth, molybdenum or vanadium oxides, may also be added. Examples of such mixtures are given and also described is a method of forming a resistor comprising, firing a layer of the mixture, a few thousandths of an inch thick on to a suitable electrically non-conducting base so as to form a hard smooth glassy layer.
