Abstract
874,404. Hydraulic jacks. PYNFORD Ltd. March 10, 1960 [March 11, 1959], No. 8408/59. Class 78 (3). A jack which lifts or supports a building comprises an outer cylinder A forming a thrust chamber C with an externally threaded cylinder B which forms a second chamber G with a hollow cylinder F carrying a load-engaging plate F<SP>1</SP>. In operation a number of jacks are placed beneath the building and air is fed via F<SP>2</SP>, F3 into chambers G to wedge the jacks against the building, after which liquid is fed into the chamber C of each of the jacks at the points where it is desired to lift the building, thereby lifting cylinder B, and exhausting the air from cylinder G until cylinder B abuts, the plate F<SP>1</SP>, whereafter cylinders B and F move together. To lock these jacks, a stop member E is screwed down the cylinder B until it abuts, and thus transfers the load to, cylinder A. When it is desired to remove a jack the stop ring is first released and air is then pumped into chamber G forcing the liquid out of chamber C. In modifications (not shown) a compression spring is connected between the cylinders B and F to expand the chamber G, or liquid is pumped into chamber G, and chamber C is connected to an air pump or contains a compression spring. In a further modification (Fig. 5) chamber V is connected to a source of constant liquid pressure and chamber W to a source of variable liquid pressure.
