Abstract
<PICT:0874291/III/1> Carbonaceous material is subjected to a pressure of 50,000-110,000 atmospheres and a temperature of 1200-3500 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alloy of at least two metals, at least one of said metals being a Group VIII metal, chromium, tantalum, or manganese, so as to produce diamond. The reaction time may be between 1 sec. and 4 mins. The carbonaceous material may be in the form of charcoal, coke, coal, graphite, coal tar pitch, wood, paper, lithium carbide or naphthalene. The alloy may comprise 2-10% or more of each metal. 01-10 parts, preferably 0.5-2 parts, of alloy per part of carbonaceous material may be employed. The product may be treated with fuming nitric acid. As shown, a central cylindrical alloy slug 34 and two outer cylindrical graphite slugs 35 are compressed according to Specification 830,210 within a hollow pyrophyllite cylinder 31 and end platinum discs 32, heat being supplied by passage of an electric current through the slug assembly. In an alternative, cylinder 31 may contain an alloy wire and a surrounding hollow cylinder of carbonaceous material. In a further alternative, cylinder 31 may contain a hollow alloy cylinder packed with carbonaceous material. Examples are given. Specification 871,645 also is referred to.
