Abstract

<PICT:0873997/III/1> NO and NO2 are removed from a gaseous mixture by reacting the oxides with magnesium hydroxide and/or carbonate in aqueous suspension to form magnesium nitrite, and heating to decompose the nitrite to NO, Mg(OH)2 and Mg(NO3)2. The concentration of nitrite in the washing liquid is maintained at 200-300 grms/1. by dilution and the solids content is 20%, or less. An alkali, alkaline earth metal, or magnesium nitrate should be included in the wash liquor. Residual gas from the acid absorption stage of an HNO3 plant enters tower 1 at 14 countercurrent to an aqueous solution of Mg(NO3)2 containing suspended Mg(OH)2. NO or NO2 should be added to the waste gas to ensure that NO and NO2 mixture is present as N2O3 proportions. The wash liquor passes to pressure vessel 2 heated by steam coil 5 where, at 140 DEG -200 DEG C., the Mg(NO2)2 is decomposed to NO, Mg(OH)2 and Mg(NO3)2. The NO is oxidised in chamber 4, after decompression to maintain a pressure 3-6 atms., and returned either to the waste gas feed to tower 1 or to the HNO3 plant at 13. From 2 the wash liquor passes to precipitation tank 3, with, or without, separation of the Mg(OH)2, where addition of alkali, or alkaline earth, metal carbonate, or NH3 and CO2 converts Mg(NO3)2 to Mg(OH)2, MgCO3 and basic carbonate which may be returned to the wash liquor cycle 12 through 9 after separation of the nitrate formed. Decomposition liquor from pressure vessel 2 may also be returned to the cycle through 11.
