Abstract
A hardenable composition comprises an aminoplast, e.g. a urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin, and a hardening agent which does not melt or decompose below 100 DEG C. and which is in the form of particles, preferably of a size more than 0,5 mm., enclosed in a layer of an acid amide having a melting point of at least 50 DEG C. as protective substance without hardening action. The amides also have a plasticizing action on the aminoplasts. Hardening agents specified are sodium chloroacetate, oxalic and adipic acids and ammonium chloride which is the preferred one and the coating thereof is described in the examples (see Group III). Acid amides specified are the amides of stearic, palmitric, caproic, myristic, acrylic and methacrylic acids.ALSO:In coating ammonium chloride, for use as a hardener for aminoplasts, pulverulent ammonium chloride is suspended at an elevated temperature in a solution of an acid amide having a melting point of at least 50 DEG C. in a solvent in which ammonium chloride is substantially insoluble and the mixture is then cooled during which the acid amide is deposited on the particles of ammonium chloride. The examples describe the above method of coating ammonium chloride with palmitic, stearic, caproic and acrylic acid amides Myristic and methacrylic acid amides are also specified. Solvents specified are petrol, benzene, methyl alcohol and trichlorethylene.
