POUR LA FABRICATION D'ISOLANTS ET REVETEMENTS LIGNEUX. Nov. 6, 1957 [Nov. 6,1956; Nov. 4, 1957], No. 34638/57. Class 140. Cellulosic materials, particularly wood, wood pulp, panels made from such pulp or similar material, and flax stems for subsequent pulping and making into panels, are fireproofed by treating them with aqueous ammonia solution and thereafter with an aqueous solution containing phosphate ions, e.g. aqueous phosphoric acid or acid ammonium phosphate of a pH such that ammonium phosphate is formed in the material and the latter is substantially neutral. The treatment may be effected by immersion or spraying, and may be intermittent or continuous. Waterproofing of the materials, e.g. with an emulsion of microcrystalline wax precipitated thereon, may be effected before, during, or after fireproofing, with or without drying between the processes. Flax stems, after the fireproofing treatment, may be pulped with microcrystalline wax and urea-formaldehyde resin, and formed into panels. Fungicides or insecticides such as pentachlorphenol or ammonium fluoride may be included in the treating solutions.
