Abstract
873,345. Discharging from aircraft. DEVANTIER, K. E. Nov. 19, 1959 [Nov. 20, 1958], No. 39240/59. Class 9(2). Hydraulically operated means for ejecting a capsule containing a transmitter, such as that described in Specification 821,268, from an aircraft comprises a ram 5 aligned with the capsule 2 and exposed at one end to the pressure of the hydraulic fluid in a conduit 1, which also contains a piston 3a of greater weight than the ram. The ram has a head slidable in a chamber 6 formed by an enlargement of the conduit. On rapid deceleration produced by the aircraft colliding with an obstacle, the ram and piston tend to move forwards due to their inertia. Since they are of unequal mass the pressure set up in the hydraulic fluid by the piston thrusts the ram towards the capsule, which, due to its inertia also moves towards the ram, the air between in chamber 6 being compressed. A cutter 17 carried by the casing of the capsule punctures a plate 16 of frangible material, such as nylon, which closes a gas-filled chamber within the ram. The ram and capsule then move together towards the outlet of the conduit and detents 9b move radially inwards to prevent return of the ram due to the gas pressure. Meanwhile hydraulic fluid leaks along an annular passage 11 and thrusts detents 8b radially outwards, so that the capsule 2 can escape from the conduit. In a modification, instead of making the rod 3a very long, about 2 metres, and its path of travel at least 2À5 to 3 metres, to produce the momentum necessary for ejecting the capsule, the weight of the seats (and passengers) is operatively connected to the counterweight, Fig. 9. The counterweight piston 18 is connected to a flexible cable 20, which is attached to the seats in such a way that, in the event of a crash, the excessive deceleration causes the momentum of the seats to be transmitted to the piston and so operates the ram 5.
