[Also in Group XXII] Hydraulic apparatus, such as a press, shaper, slotter, rock drill, or other member comprises two chambers 17, 18, Fig. 1, which are formed by a differential area piston 12 in a cylinder 11 and are connected by a passage 22, 23, 24, 25 containing valve means 26 arranged to permit flow from the chamber 18 of smaller effective area, which is connected to a source 20 of hydraulic pressure, to the chamber 17 of larger effective area, which communicates with a valve 34 operable to control the release of hydraulic fluid therefrom, on the occurrence of a predetermined high pressure in the chamber 18 and, thereafter, to permit flow in the same direction at a lower pressure, the predetermined high pressure being greater than the pressure required to return the piston with the valve 34 fully open. The control valve 34 consists of a piston 35 connected by a spring 38 to a manually-operable lever 39. With the lever in the position shown, the piston 12 having been moved to its upper position by the pressure from the pump in the chamber 18, the fluid moves the piston 28 of the valve 26 upwards and passes through a port 32, passages 24, 33 and the valve 34 to an exhaust line 40. When the lever is moved to the left, the piston 35 of the valve 34 closes the exhaust line and pressure builds up in the passage 25 and chamber 17 to move the piston downwardly, fluid in the lower chamber passing through the connecting passages and valve 26 to the upper chamber 17. The pressure is maintained on the ram until the lever 39 is moved to the right, the pressure then being relieved, the valve 26 closing and the ram immediately rising since the pump is permanently connected to the chamber 18. When the ram abuts a stop 41 high pressure in the chamber 18 and passages 22, 23 re-opens the valve 26. In another embodiment, the valve 26 is replaced by a spring-loaded non-return valve and a valve in parallel with the non- return valve operated mechanically by a striker on the ram. In a further embodiment, a low-pressure pump 50, Fig. 5, is included in the hydraulic circuit to provide a rapid approach stroke of the ram. The pump is connected by an unloader valve 51 and a non-return valve 52 to the line 25. The valve 51 has a member 57 spring-urged to a closed position by a spring 56, and a member 59 which, when the pressure in the chamber 17 is higher than that delivered from the pump 50, moves the member 57 to the left to by-pass the output from the pump to a reservoir 19. In order that the closing of the valve 26 in the high-pressure circuit may not be impaired by fluid trapped below its piston, the ends of the cylinder of the valve are interconnected by a passage 64 in which is a piston- and-cylinder device 62. The control valve 34 may be replaced by a control unit such as is described in Specification 872,950.
