Apparatus for introducing an initial charge of coloured paste P into a collapsible tube T around a bush S defining a main central passage for the extrusion of white paste, which is subsequently introduced into the tube above the coloured paste, and at least one minor passage for the extrusion of the coloured paste, comprises an intermittently-rotatable table 13 carrying supports 22 for the tubes to be filled, and a vertically-movable support 15 actuated by an air cylinder 16 and carrying devices 20 and 21 for introducing the bush and coloured paste and placing a washer W on the surface of the latter. The device 20 comprises a slidable mandrel 46, Fig. 4; which may be raised and lowered by an air cylinder 54, and an annular filling-nozzle 31 formed by concentric tubes 26, 27 and connected by a valve 34, metering cylinder-40 and flexible pipe 35 to a reservoir 14 containing a supply of coloured paste which is maintained under pressure by compressed air supplied through a pipe 36. The annular space 50 between the tube 26 and mandrel 46 forms an air duct which is periodically connected to a source of compressed air by a cam-operated valve. The device 21, Fig. 5, comprises a mandrel 57 slidable within a tube 56 under the action of an air cylinder 62. The operator inserts the tubes T in the supports and for each cycle of operation places a bush S on the end of the mandrel 46 and a washer W on the end of the mandrel 57. He then operates switches to initiate one cycle in which the table 13 is rotated one step to position an unfilled tube below the device 20 and a filled tube below the device 21, and the cylinder 16 is operated to lower the support 15 so that the devices 20 and 21 enter the tubes. The bush S is thus positioned in the mouth of the unfilled tube and the washer W is placed on the surface of material in the filled tube. The valve 34 and cylinder 40 are then operated to deliver a measured quantity of coloured material through the nozzle 31 into the unfilled tube, the air cylinder 54 raises the mandrel 46 to release the bush S and an air blast is delivered through the duct 50 to sever the material from the nozzle. At the same time, the air cylinder 62 raises the mandrel 57 to release the washer. The support 15 is then raised and the cycle repeated. Specification 813,514 is referred to.
