Abstract

872,780. Mounting terminal; metal-tovitreous or ceramic seal carrying conductors through partitions. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Dec. 4, 1957 [Dec. 18, 1956], No. 38523/56. Classes 36 and 38 (1). An electrical conductor passing, with clearance, through a hole in a body, is secured in position by filling the space between the conductor and the wall of the hole with a hardsetting insulating material, e.g. mica-loaded shellac or sintered ceramic, applied by spraying. As shown, a support-plate 1 for a three-pin plug has holes 3 in which conductor pins 2 are positioned while the hard-setting insulating material is sprayed into the space around the pins from each side in turn. The walls of the holes may be flared outwardly to assist penetration of the sprayed material. The body is of heat-resistant material having a low thermal coefficient of expansion, e.g. metal or alloy, laminated glass sheet, silicone-bound mica, or ceramic, or it may be of phenol-formaldehyde or other plastic. The pins 2 are of a conducting material also having a low thermal coefficient of expansion such as high-nickel stainless steel, or for high temperatures they may be of molybdenum or molybdenum disilicide with or without an addition of alumina. They may each have an annular groove 4, or have recesses or a circumferential ridge, or be roughened to increase adhesion of the sprayed material. If the sprayed material is ceramic it is preferably covered by a waterproof coating of silicone varnish or ceramic glaze.
