Abstract
872,639. Photographic flash lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 1, 1958 [Feb. 13, 1957], No. 24739/60. Divided out of 872,638. Class 9(2). [Also in Group XX] A lamp containing actinic material is flashed by connecting the electrodes to a piezoelectric crystal 46 and deforming the crystal to produce the necessary electric energy. Leads 47, 48 connect the crystal to a photoflash bulb such as described in Specification 29/58, and deformation of the crystal is synchronized with a camera shutter mechanism. When a plunger 16 is depressed, a lever 19 is rotated and stresses a spring 21, which engages a lug 23 on a shutter member 24. Lever 19 moves away from a projection 26 of the member 24 and strikes a bell-crank lever 28 causing the latch 31 to disengage from a lug 32 of the member 24. The spring 21 then rotates the shutter and exposes the aperture 33. As the shutter pivots, a pin 36 moving in a slot 37 moves a lever 34, so stressing a spring 38 that, at the instant the aperture 33 is uncovered, a disc 40 rotates, bringing an arcuate slot 42 across the aperture 33. A stop 44 limits the movement of the disc 40. While the shutter operates, the lever 34 releases an arm 51, which is rotated by a spring 53, so that a hammer 55 strikes the crystal 46 and thus generates a high voltage to flash the lamp. On release of the plunger 16, a spring 54 returns the arm 51 to its original position, the plunger and shutter members 24, 40 being returned by a spring 17.
