872,632. Water softening and regenerating; filters. PFAUDLER PERMUTIT Inc. May 5, 1960 [May 13, 1959 ; Jan. 29, 1960], No. 15903/60. Class 46. [Also in Group XXIX] An underdrain for a water softener or filter having a dished bottom 11, Fig. 3, comprises a dished false bottom 41 of larger spherical radius of curvature fastened to the bottom by clamps 46 to provide an underdrain space 16. The tank has a lining 40 of rubber or polyvinyl chloride and the edges of the false bottom 41 are clamped between sealing rings 49, 50. The clamps 46 are " L " shaped and are held by stainless steel bolts 47 welded to the tank wall. Disc-type strainers 17 are clamped by bolts 52 inserted through cross-bars 53 under apertures 42 in the false bottom. The unit is suitable for use with highly corrosive liquids such as sulphuric or hydrochloric acid used for regenerating cation-exchange material operating on the hydrogen cycle.
