Abstract

1,223,238. Ethylene dichloride purification. B. F. GOODRICH CO. 5 Aug., 1969 [5 Aug., 1968], No. 39032/69. Heading C2C. Ethylene dichloride obtained by the chlorination of ethylene using a ferric chloride catalyst is purified from iron chlorides by contact with activated carbon having a surface area of at least 1000 m<SP>2</SP>/g. and an iodine number of 900 or more, preferably followed by treatment with activated alumina to remove water. In a preferred embodiment two columns, each containing beds of activated carbon and activated alumina, are used, and that not in use is reactivated by purging with air, washing and drying.
