Abstract

872,587. Moulding handles for hammers. PLUMB Inc., FAYETTE R. May 4, 1960, No. 15673/60. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXIII] A method of manufacturing a handle for a hammer comprises drawing fibre-glass roving of uni-directional parallel glass filaments through a bath of rigid thermo-setting polyester resin to coat the roving with said resin, flattening the coated roving into a continuous sheet of predetermined width, cutting the flattened and coated roving into a pair of segments 10, 11, of substantially the length desired for the handle, encasing a core. 14 of about half the length between the segments with the edge of the segments at one end thereof spaced slightly inwardly of an end of the core to leave an exposed projecting core portion 15 with the glass filaments of the segments disposed parallel to the core axis and moulding the assembled components into a unitary mass under heat and pressure. A mass 16 of a mixture of rigid and flexible thermosetting polyester resins reinforced with omnidirectional short glass fibres is added to the end of the mould preform 13.
