Abstract

872,539. Capacitors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Oct. 18, 1957 [Oct. 25, 1956], No. 32584/57. Class 37. In a method of manufacturing a capacitor, a metal strip having a coating of dielectric material is passed longitudinally through a beam of ionizing radiations whereby crosslinking of the dielectric molecules is effected. A metal strip N, coated on both sides with a layer of polymerized dielectric material, is fed from a reel A through a vacuum enclosure M, S wherein one side of the strip is irradiated by a radioactive source R, and thence over a crucible C1 from which a metallic layer is deposited on the irradiated side. The strip is then passed through a second vacuum enclosure M1, S1 and over a second crucible C2 whereby the other side is irradiated and provided with a metallic coating. The strip is finally wound on a reel F, the deposited metal layers being connected to constitute one electrode of a capacitor; the metal strip forming the other electrode. Various radioactive sources may be used, e.g. radioactive isotopes, electron accelerators, or X-rays.
