Abstract

Compositions for printing of textiles contain as binding agents aqueous emulsions of waterinsoluble or slightly water-soluble polymeric film formers, together with polycondensation products containing methylol groups obtained by the basically catalysed condensation of high molecular weight N-methylol polyethers with low molecular weight poly-N-methylol compounds. Monomers used for the preparation of the polymeric film formers are acrylic acid esters, methacrylic acid esters, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl esters and ethers, butadiene and isoprene either alone or in admixture with one another. Compounds containing functional groups capable of reacting with the modified N-methylol polyethers may also be used. Such compounds are e.g. copolymers containing polymerized acrylic acid amide and methacrylic acid amide, acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, maleic acid, crotonic acid, glycerol-mono-acrylic ester, glycol-mono-acrylic ester, acrylic acid-hydroxy-alkyl amides and acrylic acid amino-alkyl esters. For the fixation of pigments fast to solvents, particularly chlorinated hydrocarbons, film formers are preferred which contain several times in the molecule the grouping: <FORM:0872526/IV (a)/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl or aryl radical and R1 an alkyl group. N-methylol polyethers to be used are obtained by reaction of poly-N-methylol compounds and trifunctional or higher functional alcohols, e.g. hexanetriol, butanetriol, hexanetriol and glycerol or mixtures of these with hydroxy-ethylated polyhydric alcohols. N-methylol polyethers produced from polyhydric alcohols containing ether and thioether groups may also be used. Such polyethers are disclosed in Specification 872,523. Poly-N-methylol compounds to be used are those prepared from the condensation of formaldehyde with urea, urethanes, dihydrazides or acid amides, such as melamine or adipic acid diamide. Suitable pigments for inclusion in the composition are, e.g. phthalocyanines, azo dyestuffs, vat dyes, metal oxides and carbon black. Fillers, such as silicic acid and thickening agents, such as tragacanth, starch, cellulose ether, sodium alginate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic amide and ammonium polyacrylate may also be added. Oil in water emulsions, such as a benzine emulsion in water stabilized with a cetyl alcohol, may also be used as thickeners. Curing agents, such as ammonium chloride and thiocyanate are advantageously incorporated in the mixture to ensure complete condensation of the modified N-methylol polyethers on the textile. Several examples of compositions for printing textiles are included in the Specification. Specifications 792,874 and 872,524 also are referred to.ALSO:Printing paste compositions for textiles contain as binding agents aqueous emulsions of water-insoluble or slightly water-soluble polymeric film-formers, together with polycondensation products containing methylol groups obtained by the basically catalysed condensation of high molecular weight N-methylol polyethers with low molecular weight poly-N-methylol compounds.
