Abstract

872,362. Drying coated surfaces. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Dec. 30, 1959 [March 25, 1959], No. 10448/59. Class 34(1) In apparatus for drying a liquid coating of lacquer, varnish or paint on one face of a metal strip 1, the strip is drawn from a coil 2 by a reel 4 driven by a motor 5 past a coating applicator 3 and in a curved path over the periphery of a rotating roller 6 where the coating is heated by radiation from gas or oil burners or by electric elements 10 and by a current of air from fans 11 which is heated by passage about the elements. Drying may be effected solely by the heated air by the use of an arcuate baffle 12 co-operating with the roller to form a chamber having a chimney 13. The roller rotates in timed relation with the lengthwise movement of the strip and comprises a hollow member through which a heated fluid is passed as shown in Fig. 2 to ensure that the temperature of the mass of the stock is not raised to that to which the coating is raised.
