Class 143 Material is fed from a container into a hopper mounted on a counterweighted pivoted beam until the latter, in its balanced condition, automatically closes an outlet valve of the container in apparatus characterised by (a) the point of attachment to the beam of either the hopper, its counterweight or both being above the level of the beam fulcrum at balance and (b) the means by which the outlet valve is held open being disposed wholly above the valve. The beam consists of two bent members 6, one at each side of the hopper 11, each having a horizontal limb which carries the hopper-supporting and fulcrum knife edges 10, 7 respectively with the former higher than the latter. The two members 6 are joined by a rod 13 which extends above the hopper beside the container 1 and which carries a graduated bar 14 holding the sliding counterweight. The container outlet valve comprises a slide 2 (Fig. 3) urged by springs 4 to close the outlet but held open during feed by the engagement of a T-bar 19 carried by a bracket 18 secured to the upper surface of the slide with a roller 20 mounted on one end of a trip lever 21 whose other end is pivoted at 22 to the container 1. The engagement is released to stop the feed when the weigh beam tilts by raising the free end of lever 21. For this purpose the rod 13 of the beam carries a platform 27 (Fig. 1) engaging a roller 26 carried on the underside of a pivoted arm 25 whose free end passes through a hole in the trip lever 21.
