Abstract

Improved resistance to ozone degradation is conferred on a sulphur-vulcanizable rubbery copolymer of a conjugated aliphatic diene hydrocarbon with a monovinylidene compound by incorporation of a nickel salt of a dithiophosphoric acid of formula: <FORM:0872094/IV (a)/1> in which each of R and R1 is an alkyl group of not more than 5 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl group of not more than 7 carbon atoms. The rubbery copolymers are exemplified by copolymers of butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, the isomeric dimethyl butadienes and ethylbutadiene with styrene, a -methylstyrene, vinyltoluene, vinylnaphthalene, vinyldiphenyl, mono- and dichlorinated styrenes, vinyl pyridine, vinylcarbazole, 2-vinyl-5-ethylpyridine, acrylonitrile, methacrylontrile, acrylic and a -methacrylic acid, and methyl and ethyl vinyl ketones. 1%-4% of the nickel salt may be used. Examples are concerned with studies of the cracking under dynamic conditions in ozonized air of vulcanized formulations, of a butadiene-styrene copolymer, carbon black, a saturated hydrocarbon softener, zinc oxide, stearic acid, sulphur and N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazolesulphenamide with (1) the nickel salt of diisopropyldithiophosphoric acid; (2) the nickel salt of 0,0-diethyl dithiophosphate and (3) the nickel salt of 0,0-dicyclohexyl dithiophosphate and of a vulcanized formulation of a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, carbon black, zinc oxide, stearic acid, sulphur and 2,21-dithiobisbenzothiazole with the nickel salt of 0,0-diisopropyldithiophosphoric acid.
