Abstract
871,789. Toy guns. MATTEL Inc. March 18, 1958 [March 18, 1957], No. 8676/58. Class 132(3). A toy gun comprises a rack spring loaded to slide longitudinally of the gun to set a rocker oscillating and to actuate a. firing mechanism, the operation being controlled by a trigger. As shown in Fig. 1, a spring loaded rack 10 has teeth 12 which alternately engage teeth 39 and 41 of a rocker 37 to set it .oscillating about its pivot 44. The rocker carries a mass 54, which determines the frequency of oscillations, and also a strip. 42 which operates a clapper 50 which snaps back against a diaphragm 64. A trigger 58, spring loaded at 59, has a notch 57 which engages an extension 56 to the rocker to stop the operation of the gun. To reload the gun, the rack is retracted by a cocking knob, the pivot pin 44 being moved downwardly in a slot 47, Fig. 6, in the barrel frame to disengage the rocked from the rack teeth. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, the rack carries a piston 72 which, on retraction, draws water from a chamber 81 into a cylinder 73, forward movement of the piston then ejecting water from the gun. In another embodiment, Fig. 8, pellets 87 are fed into the gun barrel through an opening 105 and during operation of the gun are fed forward to a firing position by a rod 95 extending from the rack; the firing mechanism comprising a plucking member 93, secured to the rocker, which retracts and then releases a spring 97 disposed between flanges 106 and 107 on a piston rod 103. A cap firing mechanism, which operates simultaneously, comprises a strip 109, secured to the rocker, carrying a hammer 111 and a cap feed spring 116, a cap being struck on an anvil 112. In a further embodiment, Fig. 9 (not shown), a clapper is mounted on an oscillating part and is operated by a pawl pivoted on an extension to the gun frame. A gun may be constructed which makes a noise and simultaneously squirts water and fires pellets. A gun frame may be made in two halves of synthetic plastic material secured together and the rack may be spring loaded by an extension or compression spring.
