Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0871483/IV (b)/1> (wherein R1 represents a C1-6 alkyl group and R2 a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkoxy group, attached to each benzene nucleus), and the preparation thereof by reacting a 1,1diphenylethylene of the general formula: <FORM:0871483/IV (b)/2> with an a -ketocarboxylic acid R1-CO-COOH in the presence of sulphuric acid, or (when R1 =CH3) by reacting pyruvic acid with an aromatic compound of the general formula: <FORM:0871483/IV (b)/3> in the presence of sulphuric acid (at room temperature). Diphenylethylenes of the general Formula III above are prepared by reacting pyruvic acid with a compound of the general Formula V above in the presence of an agent such as sulphuric acid or aluminium chloride at a low temperature to form a 2,2-diarylpropionic acid of the general formula: <FORM:0871483/IV (b)/4> and subjecting this to decarboxylation and dehydration with sulphuric acid. Indenes of the general formula: <FORM:0871483/IV (b)/5> can be prepared by decarboxylating the compounds of the general Formula I above, and may be condensed with aminoalkylhalides to give compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0871483/IV (b)/6> (wherein R and R1 represent hydrocarbon groups) having spasmolytic and vasodilatory properties.
