Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of vinyl ester polymers are made in the presence in the aqueous polymerization medium of an organic polysiloxane and in the absence of any pulverulent inorganic substances. The polysiloxane may be a silicone oil or grease and contains at least one unit -Si-O-Siwhich carries pendant hydrocarbon radicals. The vinyl ester polymer may be a polymer of vinyl acetate or vinyl propionate or copolymers of vinyl acetate and/or vinyl propionate with other monomers such as acrylate and methacrylate esters e.g. ethyl acrylate, other vinyl esters, styrene, vinyl toluene or vinyl chloride. The polymer dispersion may be prepared by polymerizing the monomer(s) in the presence of the aqueous medium containing a catalyst e.g. ammonium persulphate, and an emulsifier e.g. the sodium salt of sulphated methyl oleate, as well as the polysiloxane e.g. a phenyl polysiloxane or hexamethyldisiloxane. The monomer and catalyst and other components of the polymerization mixture may be added stepwise.
