Abstract

871,215. Hydraulic apparatus. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. June 9, 1959 [June 9, 1958], No. 19712/59. Class 69 (2). A liquid pump flow control device comprises a temperature-responsive valve 26 controlling an opening 24 in a separator 18 dividing a sump 14 into two chambers 19, 21, one of the chambers being adapted to be connected to the inlet 17 of a pump 11 and to the exhaust 16 of a liquid - operated mechanism 12, and to be sealed from the atmosphere when the opening is closed by the valve. The opening 24 is normally closed by the temperature-responsive valve which may be a bi-metal strip 26 or other temperatureresponsive element. As the temperature of the liquid supplied by the pump 11 to the mechanism 12, which may be a steering mechanism, rises, the valve uncovers the opening 24 to permit heated fluid in the chamber 19 to mix with cooler fluid in the chamber 21 and air in the liquid to escape to atmosphere. During initial operation of the pump, the small volume of liquid in the chamber 19 permits rapid heating of the liquid so that pump cavitation noise and air intake is eliminated. Excess pressure in the chamber 19 is relieved by a pressure relief valve 29.
