Abstract
D 3 4-thiazolines are prepared by simultaneously reacting hydrogen sulphide and ammonia (or an ammonium salt of a weak acid) with a mixture of 1 mole of an a -diketo disulphide (i.e. containing the gouping -CO-C-S-S-C-CO-) and at least 2 moles of a compound containing a carbonyl group. In place of hydrogen sulphide and ammonia there may be used an alkali sulphide solution in the presence of ammonia, or an aqueous solution of colourless ammonium sulphide. Solvents may be used and a small quantity of water may be added initially. Specified products have the formula: <FORM:0871084/IV (b)/1> where R1, R2 and R3 are H, alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or heterocyclic radicals, and R4 and R5 are H, alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or heterocyclic radicals. Rings may be formed between R1 and R2 or R3, R2 and R3, and R4 and R5. The substituents may contain functional groups, such as OH, COOH, COOCH3 and COOC2H5.
