870,829. Handling radio-active materials. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 5, 1960 [Feb. 17, 1959], No. 5462/59. Class 39(4). [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXIV] A tank 156 contains radio-active aqueous raffinate from mixer settler apparatus using tributyl phosphate and water for the separation of uranium and fission product mixtures obtained from irradiated nuclear reactor fuel elements. The aqueous raffinate flows from the tank 156 through a pipe 123 to be stored, samples for analysis being removed periodically by a pump 40 contained in a casing 122 and conveyed by piping 63, 131 through concrete biological shielding 130 to a tank 146. Access to the contents of tank 146 is obtained by removing a shielding plug 148 and a cover 149. To avoid contamination of the aqueous raffinate by lubricating oil, the pump 40 has airlubricated bearings and is driven by an air turbine. The air is exhausted by way of a silencer 154 and a pipe 155 passing through the shielding. After removal of a shielding plug 136 and a cover 140, thepump can be removed from the casing 122. Before removal, the pump is washed by spraying it with water from a manifold 126.
