Abstract
870,808. Cooling electric motors. GARRETT CORPORATION. Feb. 13, 1958 [Feb. 14, 1957], No. 4774/58. Class 35. [Also in Group XXVI] In a refrigerator motor-compressor unit, the motor is cooled and lubricated by means of a combined refrigerating and lubricating fluid, a small amount of which is bled off from the main circuit into the hollow rotor shaft, from whence it escapes through small radial orifices and returns through the motor air-gap. The refrigerant may be dichlorotetrafluorethane (Registered Trade Mark " Freon 114 ") containing 1.0-0.1% lubricating oil. Refrigerant used for cooling the motor is drawn from a supply tube 81, passes through a porous bronze filter 75, and then up through a metering orifice 72 into the hollow rotor shaft 36. It then passes into the motor body through holes 83, 84 adjacent the bearings. That emerging from the upper holes 84 cools the stator in passing axially down through the air-gap and slot mouths. The spent coolant is returned by duct 95 to the inlet 26 of the compressor. The compressor comprises two rotor stages 13, 14 sealed respectively by labyrinths 32, 35, and is isolated from the motor body by a seal 55.
