Abstract

870,764. Photoflash lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Dec. 24, 1958 [Dec. 26, 1957], No. 41776/58. Class 9(2). Apparatus is provided for testing photoflash lamps, to determine whether the bulb is properly positioned in its base, and comprises a holder for supporting the lamp, a plurality of electrically conducting fingers, means for disposing the fingers to encompass the lamp, an electric circuit including the fingers as contacts and means responsive to deflection of at least one of the fingers by the lamp to cause ejection of the lamp from the holder. Each lamp 10 is inserted in jaws 12, 14 pivotally mounted on a conveyer chain 24 and provided with intermeshing gears 26, 28. Pins 30 projecting from the jaws are connected by a spring 32, which holds the jaws in the support position. An apertured guide 34, Fig. 5, is attached to one pin 30, and receives the second pin 30. Each jaw assembly carries a wheel 40 and has two wheels 42 attached to the chain 24, the wheels 40, 42 being guided in tracks 44, 46 respectively, Fig. 2. Similar mechanisms operate on lamps carried by the upper and lower chain, Fig. 5. Indexing means (not shown) advance five lamps at a time to the testing assembly 52, Fig. 2, where the continuity is checked and the testing assembly 54, where the concentricity is tested. A shaft 76 is operated by a cam follower 86 to place the bulbs in sockets 106, where the end contact 13 presses against a contact rod and the metal base is in contact with the socket wall and hence the lamp is included in an electrical circuit. If the resistance of the lamp is too high or too low contacts in an electrical 'memory' circuit are closed' to bring about ejection of the lamp when it reaches the ejection station. Simultaneously if one of the fingers 162 is deflected a second 'memory' circuit is closed and the faulty lamp later rejected for lack of concentricity. Specification 870,765 is referred to.
