Abstract
870,593. Coating with metals. SPARCATRON Ltd. April 24, 1959 [March 7, 1958], No. 7372/58. Class 82(2) [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for providing a hardening and wear-resistant and/or corrosion resistant metallic surface on a metal or alloy workpiece 6 by electric spark and/or arc discharges between the workpiece and an electrode 4, comprises a capacitor 1 and half-wave rectifier 2 connected in series with a source of alternating current 8, the electrode being connected to the forward current output terminal 5 of the rectifier and the workpiece to the other terminal 7. The electrode may be vibrated transversely with manually or automatically variable amplitude and/or phase relationship with the supply, by an electric motor or electromagnet energized by the supply current which may be a transformer 8. In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown) the transformer is omitted. Automatic electrode feed is provided to maintain the spark gap. The latter may be shielded by an inert fluid or atmosphere, supplied through a hollow electrode, which may contain chemical elements for introduction into the surface. An inductance 9 in series with the rectifier is omitted in other embodiments, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown). Specification 817,408 is referred to.
