Abstract

870,554. Hydro-pneumatic springs; regulating road vehicle height. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. Feb. 13, ]958 [Feb. 23, 1957; Nov. 21, 1957; Jan. 7, 1958], Nos. 6154/57, 36245/57, and 562/58. Classes 108(2) and 108(3). A hydro-pneumatic spring comprises a casing B (Figs. 1, 2 of the third Provisional Specification) rigid with the vehicle frame and a piston (not shown) connected by a link E, crank K, and shaft S to a road wheel (not shown). A diaphragm D separates oil from air under pressure. Oil is forced into a space C between the piston and diaphragm D by the action of a pump plunger 1 engaged by a cam L carried by the shaft S. This has the effect of raising the vehicle to a predetermined height, a spindle 3a, then lifting a valve 10 to permit escape of oil from the space C via a channel 14a to a reservoir R. In a modification (Figs. 1-5 of the first Provisional Specification, not shown), the valve 10 is in a separate housing from the pump and has an operating member actuated from a further plunger and a respective further cam on the shaft S. In the modification shown in Fig. 2 of the second Provisional Specification the reservoir R is augmented by an external reservoir (not shown). Oil is drawn from the external reservoir during pumping strokes via an inlet valve G. When the valve 10 is lifted oil is returned to the reservoir R as before but excess oil in the latter is forced back to the external reservoir via a valve H. One external reservoir may supply a plurality of suspension units (Fig. 3, of the second Provisional Specification, not shown). The pump plunger 3 embodies a filter element 7 which also acts as a flow restriction. Specification 867,500 also is referred to.
