Abstract

870,517. Rotary cup burners. DANKS & CO. (OLDBURY) Ltd., EDWIN. Dec. 31, 1958 [Jan. 2, 1958], No. 134/58. Class 75(1). A burner comprises a rotary atomizing cup 102 mounted on the shaft of a turbine 80 driven by air flowing axially through the burner casing 10 and air guide vanes 66 adapted to cause the air flowing from the turbine 80 through a convergent passage 158 surrounding the atomizing cup to rotate in a direction opposite to the rotation of the cup. The air is delivered tangentially to the casing 10 by a tube 38, and a spiral baffle 42 directs the air towards guide webs 60 forming divergent nozzles of rectangular section which discharge the air on to curved turbine blades 82. The turbine is keyed to a hollow shaft 78 surrounding a fuel pipe 34 extending into an apertured cylindrical fuel distributer head 120 secured to the end of the hollow shaft 78. The atomizing cup 102 is also secured to the end of the hollow shaft 78 and comprises a frusto-conical wall which tapers in radial thickness towards its fuel discharge lip 108. The outer wall of the convergent passage 158 surrounding the atomizing cup is formed by an axially movable ring 150 having a groove 162 in which residual fuel collects when the cup is at rest, the collected fuel flowing through a passage in the ring 150 to drip on to an inner guard ring 165. The burner casing 10 is pivoted to the end wall 6 of an air box 2 welded to a plate 174 bolted to a boiler flue tube 210. Secondary air is delivered to the air box 2 by a duct 166 having curved smoothing plates 170 and passes through a cowl 178 having splitter plates 180 into the flue tube 210. The discharge of secondary air is controlled by a sleeve 196 axially adjustable by shafts 198 having left hand threads co-operating with nuts 200 welded to the sleeve 196 and right hand threads co-operating with nuts 202 welded to plate 186 fixed to the end wall 6 of the air box 2. Part of the secondary air passes through slots 194 in a frusto-conical member 190 secured to the end wall 6 and passes through an annular aperture 197 surrounding the burner.
