Abstract

870,374. Vehicle power steering. GIRLING Ltd. July 29, 1958 [May 4, 1957], No. 10987/57. Class 79(5). In a vehicle power-steering system the power cylinder 21 Fig. 1 encloses a portion of an Operating piston rod 20 forming part of the steering mechanism and is anchored to a stationary part of the vehicle by means holding the cylinder 21 in the axial direction while permitting transverse flexing to accommodate the normal movements of the rod 20 required by the steering geometry. In one example the rod 20 is a track rod connected between a drop arm 15 and idler arm 18 to which the steering arms 17 are connected through links 16. The cylinder 21 is disposed within a vehicle-frame cross member 34 Fig. 2 with the rod 20 extending through apertures 36 at the ends. The cylinder 21 is flexibly mounted at one end by rubber rings 43 clamped in an extension 44 of the cylinder 21 between washers 45 by nuts 50 and clamping an intermediate split washer 42 held on sheet metal complementary semi-circular conical sections 39, 41 which are bolted at 48 to a fixed bracket 49 on one side of the vehicle. The sections 39, 41 have flanges 46 at the ends which are similarly clamped between rubber rings 47 to permit flexing on the bolts 48.
