Abstract

869,980. Tyre treads. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. April 20, 1959, No. 13351/59. Class 144 (2). A circumferentially-ribbed tyre tread comprises a plurality of circumferentially-unconnected spaced slots formed in the surface of at least one of the ribs, each slot being formed of interconnected, respectively generally transversely and circumferentially-extending, portions with the transversely-extending portions having a collective mean depth not greater than 35% of the rib height, and that of the circumferentially-extending portions being not less than 50% of the rib height. Figs. 1 and 11 show slots 10 in ribs 11, the slots being arranged in pairs and having a generally hook-shape with the slots of each pair overlapping transversely and circurnferentially and extending from opposite side edges of the rib. Each slot is formed of transverse portions 10a and 10b, and circumferential portions 10c, 10d and 10e, the depth of the various portions being as shown in Fig. 11. Fig. 12 shows slots 20, in a rib 21, each extending from edge to edge of the rib in stepwise fashion with the depths of the transverse portions 20a, 20b and 20c, and the circumferential portions 20d and 20e being as shown. Fig. 13 shows a further shape of edge-to-edge slot 30 having transverse portions 30a and 30b interconnected by circumferential portions 30c, 30d and 30e. In all cases the slots are moulded in the tread by suitably shaped inserts secured to the mould wall.
