869,945. Dynamo-electric machine casings; cooling dynamo-electric machines. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. June 25, 1959 [July 10, 1958], No. 21809/59. Class 35. A hermetically sealed electric motor pump unit for pumping high-temperature fluids, and capable of simple disassembly, includes a sealed stator cartridge 50 comprising an outer shell 64, core 52 with windings whose end turns 54 are embedded in a heat-conducting silicone resin 62, sleeves 72, end members 66, 68 and a stainless steel stator can 80. Cartridge 50 is held in place by a flange 236 on end member 68 which is clamped between motor housing 22 and pump casing 24. Radial bearings 28, 30 and thrust bearing 136 are cooled and lubricated by the circulation of some of the pumped fluid through auxiliary impeller 142, through the bearings and rotor chamber 97, and through coiled heat-exchanging tubing 144 inside water jacket 166. Beneath thrust bearing 136 is a thermal barrier arrangement 126, the upper part 248 of which has a flange 214 which is clamped between cartridge end component flange 236 and pump casing 24. The lower part 246 includes labyrinthine seals 128, 130 which minimize the flow of fluid past the barrier, and cavities 250, 252 to improve the thermal insulation. To dismantle the pump terminal box 73 is removed and motor housing 22 and stator cartridge 50 can then be removed.
