Abstract

969,153. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. MOTEURS DROUARD. Jan. 22, 1963 [Feb. 2, 1962], No. 2666/63. Heading H2A. In an electric motor pump unit a gap tube separates the stator and rotor, the rotor cavity being initially filled, through a filter, with pumped fluid which does not circulate around the hydraulic circuit so that cooling fins are needed on the outer casing of the motor. Shaft mounted rotor 4 is supported in bearings 9, 10 located in housings 8, 7, respectively. The stainless steel gap tube 6 has flanged ends and is mounted on and sealed to bosses 20, 19 by rings 16, 15. Filter 21, consisting of a sintered metal disc, allows clean fluid to pass through a passage in housing 8 into the rotor cavity, the displaced air being exhausted to atmosphere through bleeder 33 which communicates with the rotor cavity through bore 13 and radial holes 14 in the shaft. In operation the pressure drop across the filter element is large enough to prevent any large quantity of fluid being expelled through bearing sleeve 9 so the same fluid remains within the rotor cavity. The stator cavity is filled with good thermally conductive material e.g. quartz, silica, and casing 34 has both external and internal fins 35, 36. Thrust plate 28 and the bearing sleeves preferably comprise a mixture of sintered bronze and P.T.F.E. so that accidental dry operation of the motor may be permitted. The bearing housing 8 preferably has a heat-proof coating on its inner wall.
