Abstract

869,941. Apparatus for driving and withdrawing piles. STOREY (ENGINEERS) Ltd., THOS. March 28, 1960 [March 26, 1959], No. 10576/59. Class 68(2). Each pile 19 co-operates with a guide structure 18 on the load bearing platform 10 and has a chain 63 attached at longitudinal spaced positions 62 and an intervening bight of the chain is driven by a sprocket 65 causing relative longitudinal movement between the platform and pile. The guide structures 18 take the form of a square section box, each side of which comprises a pair of channel-section members 24 connected by short channels 25, the four side frames being united through corner angles. 26 and triangular gussets 27. Rollers 28, mounted in brackets 29 on the gussets 27 guide the pile 19 into box 18. A pair of brake shoes 31 having a common pivot at 32 are mounted between a pair of diaphragms 30 and serve to locate the pile 19 in its box 18. The pile box 18 is pivoted about a transverse horizontal axis upon a triangular frame 35 comprising a rectangular frame 36 attached at its corners by clevises 39 to another rectangular frame 41, two upright members 48 pin-connected at 46, 47 to the I-beam 45 of the frame 41, and tubular stays 51, 56 of such a length that the members 48 are held vertical. The pile box is held vertical by means of pins 58 connecting the brackets 60 to the members 48 and by pinning clevises 82 at opposite sides of its lower part to T-shaped arms 83 hinged at 84 upon frame 41. Alternatively the pile box may be disconnected from the swinging arms 83 and fixed at an inclination to the vertical by bolting its upper brackets 60 to bushes in the inclined stays 51. The excess length of chain 63 is drawn around pulleys 64 and embraces sprocket 65 mounted on frame 67 which also carries driving motor 71, reduction gear box 72, coupled wormdrive units 74, 75 and clutch 77.
