Abstract
Hollow articles, e.g. gloves, boots, shoes, and industrial protective clothing are made by clothing a former with fabric, treating the outer surface of the fabric with a volatile hygroscopic substance and subsequently dipping the fabric-covered former into an aqueous dispersion of a synthetic rubber-like material. Alternatively the hygroscopic substance may be applied to the fabric before it is placed on the former. A second, less volatile hygroscopic substance may be applied separately or together with the first. The volatile hygroscopic substance may be methyl alcohol and the other substance ethylene diethylene or propylene glycol. Suitable rubber-like substances are polychloroprene, plasticized polyvinylchloride or polyacrylonitrile. A small quantity of a conventional coagulant may be added to the hygroscopic substances. A number of layers of the synthetic rubber may be applied.
