[Also in Group XXXV] An electric welding apparatus includes a welding machine connected to a mains supply and a welding electrode handle having jaws 19, 20 which releasably hold an electrode and are electrically connected to the machine, there being mounted on the handle a control switch 25, 26, 27 connected in the circuit of a low voltage relay adapted when its circuit is closed, to close a relay operated circuit supplying the electrode, the relay operated switch being adapted automatically to open when the control switch circuit is opened; the jaws on the handle are spring loaded, as at 22, and adapted in one position to clamp the electrode, and in its second position to release the electrode and simultaneously engage the control switch 25-27 to open the control switch relay circuit. Lateral extensions 27 on the switch 25-27 enable the control circuit to be opened whilst the electrode is still retained in the jaws. In a modification the control switch 25-27 may be permanently biased in the "OFF" position by means of a spring and a lever may be mounted on the lower end of the handle and arranged so that when the handle is gripped the lever is held against the control switch so as to retain it against the spring in the ON position.
