Abstract
869,616. Optical glass. LEITZ G.m.b.H., ERNST. April 3, 1958, No. 10812/58. Class 56. An optical glass comprises by weight 16-32% B 2 O 3 , 10-23% Al 2 O 3 , 25-50% La 2 O 3 and 8-31% of one or more oxides of a bivalent element or elements, the sum of the contents of B 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 amounting to at least 29% and at most 48À3%, the balance, if any, consisting of other compatible ingredients. The glass may additionally contain up to 10% by weight of zirconium oxide and/or up to 10% by weight of tantalum oxide. Specified bivalent elements are calcium, magnesium, barium and cadmium. The glasses may be made by smelting the ingredients in a platinum crucible at 1200‹- 1300‹C. and stirring the melt until it has cooled to about 1000‹C.
