Abstract

Therapeutic compositions comprise one or more pharmacologically-active barbiturates together with one or more compounds of general formula <FORM:0869369/VI/1> wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl groups preferably having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms or are together a hydrocarbon chain which together with the nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring, X is a COOR group in which R is an alkyl group, preferably having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms or, when R1 and R2 and the adjacent nitrogen atom form a pyrrolino or pyrrolidino group X may be a hydrogen, or halogen atom, and in which the ring A may be further substituted by halogen atoms and/or non-toxic salts thereof. Specified compounds of the above general formula are; the ethyl and methyl esters of N-(b -pyrrolidino)-butyryl-p-amino benzoic acid; the n-butyl ester of N-(b -piperidino)-butyryl-p-amino benzoic acid; b -pyrrolidino-butyric acid anilide and its 4-chloro and 2,4-dichloro derivatives. Specified barbiturates are: phenobarbitone, hexobarbitone, secobarbitone, pentobarbitone, butobarbitone, 5-allyl-5-(1-methyl-butyl)-malonyl carbamide, 5 - ethyl - 5 - (1 - methyl - propyl) - malonyl carbamide and phenylethyl malonyl carbamide. The ratio of "anilide" to barbiturate may be between 1 : 5 and 5 : 1. Desirably it is at least 0.75 : 1 and preferably is from 1.5 : 1 to 3 : 1. The compositions may be in any convenient pharmaceutical form, e.g. tablets, syrups, injectable solutions and suppositories containing conventional adjuvants.
