Abstract

868,998. Transistor switching circuits. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd. Jan. 5, 1960 [Jan. 22, 1959], No. 2386/59. Class 40(6) In a transistor switching circuit in which the collector is connected to an inductive load, a capacitor is connected to the collector through an impedance so as to charge when the transistor is conductive and discharge through the load when it is non-conductive, the impedance having a higher value for charging current than discharging currents. Thus, the inductive load 2 (which may be a relay) is shunted by a capacitor 8 in series with a parallel resistor-diode combination 6, 7. When an input-pulse causes the transistor to conduct the capacitor charges slowly through resistor 7. At the end of the pulse the back e.m.f. developed across the load causes the collector potential to rise to a value at which the diode 6 commences to conduct. Accordingly the rise of voltage at the collector is delayed and avalanche breakdown avoided. The input pulse may be applied to the base or emitter and is preferably followed by a reverse pulse to speed the switching off, a further diode 5 prevents excessive voltage being developed across the load.
