Abstract

868,624. Seats. GOULDING, W. H. Dec. 3, 1959 [Dec. 24, 1958], No. 41620/58. Classes 52(2) and 52(3). The seat part of a swivel chair is vertically movable by an electric motor housed in the base and driving a screw jack. As shown, a metal shaft 13 is fixed to a seat part having an upholstered bottom with a padded front edge 14a. Shaft 13 is removably and rotatably mounted in a box at the junction of legs 5 and rests on the ram 8a of a screw jack 8. The jack 8 is operated by an electric motor 3 through a reduction gear 4. Motor 3 is controlled by start, stop and reverse switch 12 which is only overridden by a limit switch 15 as the chair moves to its lowest position. An upper limit switch may also be provided. Hinged flaps 16, 17 are carried across the arm rests of the chair and may serve as a tray or book rest. If the motor is battery driven, the batteries may be housed in the base part 2. Reference is made, in the Provisional Specification, to the use of a hydraulic jack, a winch and cable or a system of links as alternatives to the screw jack 8.
