Abstract
A glutamic acid solution is obtained from beet sugar wastes by heating butyl alcohol or a higher aliphatic alcohol, in the presence of an esterification catalyst, with beet sugar waste or a mother liquor obtained therefrom after crystallisation of glutamic acid hydrochloride, so as to esterify the pyroglutamic acid and glutamic acid present, washing the reaction mixture with water, allowing the washed mixture to separate into two layers, and heating the separated alcoholic phase in the presence of an inorganic acid or alkali to hydrolyse the pyroglutamic acid ester and resulting pyroglutamic acid to glutamic acid. Specified beet sugar wastes are Staffen's filtrate and vinasse. The mixture of alcohol and beet sugar waste which is heated with the esterification catalyst may be that obtained by extracting beet sugar waste with the alcohol. Preferably excess alcohol is partially distilled off before washing with water.
