Abstract
The niobium minerals pyrochlore and niocalite are concentrated by froth flotation in the presence of catechol in addition to frothing and collecting agents. The operation is preferably effected in two flotation stages, the first stage being conducted at a pH of 10-13 (by addition of alkali to the pulp) without catechol, resulting in the removal of impurities in the float product, and the second stage being conducted at a pH of 2-10 (by addition of e.g. sulphuric, hydrochloric, nitric or hydrofluosilicic acid or magnesium fluosilicate, to the first-stage residue) in the presence of catechol, resulting in the flotation of the niobium. Specified frothing agents are pine oil, methyl isobutyl carbinol and propylene glycol methyl ethers. Specified collectors are high molecular weight aliphatic amines, amine acetate salts, N-alkyl trimethyene diamines in which the alkyl is derived from oleic acid, and N-alkyl trimethylene diamine diacetate in which the alkyl is derived from tallow. If desired, the froth flotation may be preceded by gravity separation operations such as sink-float and tabling.
