In a brush-making machine wherein tufts of bristles are inserted into rows of holes in a brush stock, the spread of bristles, already inserted in a hole, overthe next hole to be filled is prevented by a pair of guard members each of which is capable of being disposed in the path of the bristle-inserting tool whereby it is pivoted to deflect the inserted bristles away from the inserting tool. In Figs. 1, 4, the guard members 6, 7 are plates hinged to a support 5 which is slidable vertically in a fixed guide bracket 2 by a fluid pressure cylinder 11 and return spring 9, as shown, or by a double acting fluid pressure cylinder, or cam means or solenoid means. The brush stocks may be fed automatically and the machine may be arranged automatically to fill successive stocks, in which case, if the stock A is filled from the bottom row upwards, the stock B which replaces it must be filled from the top row downwards. The deflection of bristles must accordingly be downwards in the filling of stock A and upwards for stock B. In the former case, the support 5 is raised so that the plates 6, 7 which when inoperative are pulled together by the spring 8, are separated by the tool 12 striking the operative plate 7. In the latter case, the support is lowered so that the plate 6 becomes the operative plate. In a modification, Fig. 8, a single pivoted plate 6a serves as the deflectors, a coil spring on the pivot 6b tending to maintain the plate 6a in a vertical position. When the support 5 is fully raised, the tool 12 swings the plate clockwise to deflect the bristles upwardly, and when the support is lowered, the plate is swung counter-clockwise to-push the bristles downwardly.
